Cincinnati Comic Expo

I spent today in Cincinnati at the Cincinnati Comic Expo and had a great time!

I sold some copies of League of Analogues (had to explain the spelling once!) and did a couple of caricatures, one of which I remembered to photograph. Both were from photographs of grandkids that weren’t present.

The other (unphotographed) one was of a boy about 6 or 8 as Superman.

It came to my attention that some of the attendees thought all I was drawing was caricatures even though I had a sign out stating that I was available for character sketches so I did a couple as samples (something I had intended to do in the studio beforehand but business has been sufficiently demanding of my time I never got around to it). Something I resolve to remedy before the Kokomo show October 23rd!

New Studio Commission Caricature

Here’s that studio commission caricature I’m also working on in betwixt and between the other projects.
A happy couple in their hot tub, SF fans, being beamed up to one of many ships in the sky.

First sketch;

When you are doing “conventional” art you can spill something all over your painting, an airbrush can spit, a loaded paintbrush can drop onto the surface, many things can happen to destroy a lot of hard work. In digital art you can flatten all your layers, reduce the pixels per inch down to web size and then overwrite your file name eliminating your large, printable file! That’s what this afternoon was devoted to, finding a large, stored back-up file and getting back to where I was before! Irritating but usually I can “do-over” things faster than I originally did them, which was the case today and it always seems to come out better the second time.

Now I’m getting into the fun part, the faces!

And I had another instance of overwriting the large file last week that made me a bit leery of getting back into this one. But I think I’ve developed a work flow that will keep me from that bone-head mistake in the future!

(New stuff on top again.)

And this one may be finished.

Worked on the knelling female figure today.

It seems the car is yellow.

Back to the book illustration project. I really like this reverse method of working (reverse of how I did the earlier illustrations, painting the colors before I do any real line work).
This is going to be a much different pallet than what has come before. the scene is at night in the rain. (I threw in a lightning bolt for dramatic effect.) There is and will be color but it will be subdued. Lori, what color is the car? If it matters.

Back to the Book Project

When you are a one-man, sole-proprietor business, and multiple people come to you with projects, you have to alternate between the tasks at hand. After the last spurt of work on Act 2 I went to another project (which I’ve completely forgotten to post!) then I had to go out of town for a week on family medical business. Then there was some live jobs, yadda-yadda-yadda. I’m just glad I have patient clients.

Back to Act 2, here’s the sketch again.

This time I’m trying a slightly different approach, going from the sketch to some background painting rather than defining the line work before getting into the painting aspect. This is going to be a night time rain drenched scene.
